green roof - gotta have it

hey all! back from a busy week back in dc. i put on a good environmental achievement award ceremony, learned that my boss (who rocks) is "leaving federal service" (and the team, office, and agency all who love him ... poo), and escaped without injury!

then off to boston - i'm such a jet-setter - for a party! it was great! i got to see a friend of over a decade, and hang out with rob's family. good folks.

rob and i saw william mcdonough speak a few nights ago. it was awesome. we humans have to find a way to make the earth want to live with us - not to just have a sustainable relationship, but a fecund relationship full of life and bursting with symbiotic potential. perhpaps my favorite part of his talk was learning about his two types of nutrients, biological nutrients (fertile soil, clean air, clean water, nitrogen, oxygen, etc.) and technological nutrients (plastics, metals, acrylic, nylon, etc.). his point is that we can't afford to waste either - we need closed loop systems to capture and retain all of the nutrients for reuse in an endless cycle without any degrdation of the quality of the nutrients. very compelling. of course, i loved hearing about his sustainable buildings too, epecially the green roof at river rouge.
